The Accessible Cabin

A wilderness cabin, becoming barrier-free.

Our cabin sits on the shores of Quesnel Lake today. As a new non-profit, we're raising funds to make it fully accessible — so nothing stands between our guests and the wild.

Too often, remote lodging shuts people out with restrictive layouts and hard-to-reach fixtures. We're setting out to build the opposite: a barrier-free cabin where guests can settle in, move freely, and simply be present in the Cariboo backcountry.

The Jakira Foundation is brand new, and our wilderness cabin is one of the first things we have. With the support of our donors, we're working to bring it up to full accessibility — and because we are a non-profit, staying here will be offered at no cost to our participants.

A startup in progress: the accessible features below are what we're raising funds to add. Want to help make them real? Donate or partner with us.
What We're Building

The accessible features we're raising funds for.

Roll-In Shower

A level-entry, roll-in shower to remove the barrier of a raised tub or lip — so bathing can be safe and independent.

Lowered Counters

Lowered, reachable counters and fixtures to put everyday tasks within comfortable range from a seated position.

Sensory-Friendly Layout

Calm, uncluttered spaces arranged to reduce sensory overload and make the cabin easy to navigate.

Wide, Roll-Through Doorways

Doorways and passages widened for wheelchair clearance so guests can move room to room without a squeeze.

Open, Roll-Through Living

Generous turning room and open floor space so guests and their mobility equipment can share the cabin comfortably.

Designed With Lived Experience

Every change is being planned alongside people with lived disability experience — empathetic engineering, not an afterthought.

Floorplans & Room Details

Planning around your equipment and care needs.

Every guest arrives with different mobility, sensory, and medical needs — so the details that matter to you matter to us. If you'd like to know how the cabin can work for your equipment, where our accessibility upgrades stand, or the measurements that matter before you travel, our team is glad to walk you through it.

Have specific needs? Contact us with your equipment and care requirements and we'll be straight with you about what's ready today and what we're still working toward, so you can plan with confidence.

Contact our team or read Plan Your Stay for more on getting here, care needs, and what to bring.
